Diversity

Our work affects every man, woman and child in the UK. The people who take part in our surveys, and the users of our statistics come from all walks of life. And so we seek to fully reflect our diverse society in our workforce.

With Investors in People accreditation, we aim to ensure equality of treatment for all, based on objectivity, fairness and respect. We work to promote and sustain an open, inclusive and supportive working environment - one that enables our people to make the most of their individual qualities and skills and to realise their full potential and aspirations. All of our employment policies and practices are designed to provide a framework that makes clear our values and expectations, while a range of flexible working options and family friendly policies help our people to be themselves at work.

Diversity awareness training is provided for employees at all levels within the business. These compulsory sessions include clarification on the importance of diversity, understanding differences in the way people work and interact, recognising preconceptions and avoiding indirect discrimination.

We support and encourage staff networks representing a range of diverse groups, each group with a senior level sponsor. We encourage these groups to engage in the business of diversity, challenge our preconceptions, make suggestions and offer support to each other. Initiatives implemented so far include a full flexi-system with a minimum 20 minute lunch break, changes to recruitment and assessment methods, diversity intranet space and a multi-faith prayer room.

ONS is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified people.
