The selection process is in two stages. The application form comes first, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and experience.

What qualifications do I need?


As a Statistician or Researcher you'll have a 2:2 degree or above in a numerate discipline, or social science with a significant research methods, social policy or statistics component. We'll also accept another relevant social research, statistical or economics qualification at the appropriate level.

For our Economist roles we're looking for a minimum of a 2:1 (or a 2:2 with a postgraduate degree) in Economics. Naturally you'll also need to have studied both macro and microeconomics.

What skills and experience do I need?

Graduate HEO specialist

Statistical Data Analysts, Assistant Methodologists, Researcher and Economists
£24,248 - £26,272* plus Civil Service pension

For graduate level entry, no relevant work experience is required. However you'll be expected to demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge gained from your degree studies. Whether you have some or no work experience you'll be able to demonstrate the ability to apply what you've learnt, enabling you to demonstrate your ability to analyse data, draw out main findings, understand and apply basic statistical theory and use statistical software packages e.g. SPSS, SAS.

You can look forward to gaining experience in the latest and best statistical methods as well as developing your team working, communication and project management skills. There'll be plenty of opportunities to develop and enhance your potential for promotion too.

Senior Statistical Data Analysts, Methodologist, Senior Researcher and Economists
£32,112 - £38,668* plus Civil Service pension

You'll be required to demonstrate an established range of skills gained from your varied relevant work experience including experience of carrying out complex statistical/research analysis, providing technical expertise to internal and external customers and leading less experienced social research, statistical, economic or methodological staff on project streams.

In return you'll enjoy a role that'll allow you to really grow and progress your career in statistics, research or economics, whilst developing other key skills such as people and project management.

BRANCH HEAD / PRINCIPAL (STATISTICIAN / RESEARCHER / ECONOMIST) (Grade 7)

£41,666 - £56,211* plus Civil Service pension

You'll be required to demonstrate a wide range of skills gained from significant relevant work experience encompassing technical and intellectual leadership on statistical/research/economic development projects including the management of a small team of technical and non-technical staff.

Playing a lead role in providing high quality data you'll be working on vital cross cutting research, statistical or economic projects, in turn contributing to government policy. As a result these are high profile roles with considerable opportunity for career development.
